I got out of bed last night, about 3 am and on the landing I am sure I saw torches moving around, but no one was there.

There’s not enough information in your story yet. Where do you live? What is the environment around you like? Was the landing in your house or outside? What sort of torches .. round lights, or ones that you light with a match? That’s just to start with.
