Sometimes yes, sometimes no. My son-in-spirit gave a clear, precise and undoubtable message at a haunted house that he had never had anything to do with. There was no mistaking it was him. I’ve had other sort-of conversations with it, and my daughter has had a couple that gave her a fright (she’s 28 now). So yes, I think they work to some degree.
